The Apple Watch Series 3 was originally released in 2017 as a replacement for the Series 2 whilst being sold along side the Series 1. The Apple Watch Series 3 featured a dual core Apple S3 SiP with an Apple W2 chip, 768MB of memory. The Apple Watch Series 3 could be configured as GPS only with 8GB of internal flash storage or as GPS and Cellular with 16GB of internal flash storage. The Apple Watch Series 3 was available in 38mm or 42mm sizes both of which featured Retina OLED displays (272x340 38mm, 312x390 42mm) The Apple Watch Series 3 had support for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n at 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 4.2, a built in Apple eSim with support for LTE networks (Cellular only) a single direct firing microphone, a single direct firing speaker, a magnetic charging port for wireless charging and a built-in 273mAh (38mm), 334mAh (42mm) rechargeable lithium polymer battery. It was also water resistant up to 50 meters.

Like its predecessors the Apple Watch Series 3 featured a heart rate sensor built into the Digital Crown on the underside of the watch. The Apple Watch Series 3 was the first to also feature a barometric altimeter. The watch strap was also easily removable so that straps could be swapped in and out.

The Apple Watch Series 3 was available in a variety of finishes across four models. Apple Watch, Apple Watch Nike+, Apple Watch Hermès and Apple Watch Edition, both the Hermès and Watch Editions were only available in the GPS + Cellular variants.
